Macroeconomics and Political Economy

Job Summary

The Joint Director of Research at PIDE will provide research team and thought leadership roles in the areas of Macroeconomics and Political Economy. The role includes conducting high-impact research, policy engagement, and collaboration with national and international organizations. The candidate will be instrumental in advancing PIDE’s reputation as a leading think tank and academic institution.

Key Responsibilities

Research
  • Oversee and coordinate research activities across PIDE’s research centers, ensuring alignment with institutional goals and national policy priorities.
  • Provide strategic direction to Chiefs of Research, setting research agendas and fostering cross-center collaboration.
  • Ensure high standards of research quality, publication output, and policy engagement across all centers.
  • Conduct high quality research in areas of:

Macroeconomics and Political Economy including (i) Growth and Structural Transformation, (ii) Growth and Structural Transformation, (iii) Financial Sector Development, External Sector and Trade Policy, (iv) Exchange Rate Policy and Inflation, (v) Public Debt and Fiscal Sustainability.

  • Supervise and mentor senior researchers, supporting their professional growth and research development.

 

Collaboration and Networking
  • Represent PIDE in national and international forums, advocating for evidence-based policymaking, and enhancing visibility of PIDE.
  • Cultivate strategic partnerships with government agencies, international organizations, and private sector stakeholders to expand research opportunities, attract funding, and maximize policy impact.
Policy Advocacy
  • Lead efforts to translate research findings into actionable policy recommendations, fostering engagement with policymakers and industry leaders.
  • Provide expert advice to government ministries, international organizations, and private sector stakeholders on international economic and financial policies.
  • Contribute to policy briefs, reports, and white papers on global economic issues.
  • Engage in policy discussions to support evidence-based decision-making at the national and international levels.
Institutional Contribution
  • Contribute to PIDE’s vision and mission through teaching, research, policy engagement.
  • Participate in conferences, seminars, and workshops to enhance PIDE’s reputation.
  • Strengthen PIDE’s role in influencing public policy.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Education: PhD in Economics (or related field) with specialization in Macroeconomics and Political Economy.
  • Experience: At least 17 years of relevant experience.
  • Academic Excellence: Strong record of publications; 4 articles in high-impact peer-reviewed journals within the last 5 years, and minimum of 10 articles overall.
  • Research Leadership: Experience in managing large-scale research projects and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Strategic Thinking: Ability to set and drive a research vision that aligns with Pakistan’s economic and development challenges.
  • Policy Influence: Ability to engage with policymakers, secure research funding, and lead policy-relevant research.
  • Collaboration & Team Management: Experience in leading diverse teams, fostering innovation, and ensuring accountability
