Course Description

This course is designed to impart to student’s knowledge on conduits of social research, methodological philosophies, methodological frameworks, and tools and approaches as employed in Development Studies, Public Policy and Management Sciences.  

Course Objectives

  • Clearly articulate what social research is and what philosophical assumptions exist in social research.
  • Describe what different types of research approaches exist in social research; qualitative, quantitative and mixed-method.
  • Explain what different types of qualitative data are.
  • Apply different research designs for different topics of scientific inquiry.
  • Explain various research methods and instruments which can be of use for students interested in social research.
  • Enable students to understand what literature review is and its types are and how to construct conceptual framework, both pictographically and textually.
  • Make students learn about different approaches and types of analysis as used in the qualitative research.
  • Enable students to understand and write academically.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand course contents in the light of the weekly designed modules.
  • Apply the tools and methods as used in the public policy and development studies to extract, analyze and interpret data.
  • Apply analytical and policy frameworks used in both disciplines in analyzing development and policy related concerns, challenges and issues.
